- Abstract
A brief review of the results obtained with high-dose brief-duration intravenous streptokinase infusion in patients with evolving myocardial infarction is presented. Coronary clot lysis occurs as frequently with the intravenous approach as with intracoronary application if treatment is initiated early. The time taken to lyse a coronary thrombus is somewhat longer. This, however, will often be more than compensated by initiation of therapy without need for prior catheterisation. Well-designed trials of sufficient scope are needed to ascertain the true impact of thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction upon short- and long-term mortality as well as the complication rates associated with this treatment.
