- Authors
Bottigheimer, Ruth b.
- Abstract
The article focuses on "Derekh Emunah, Der Weg des Glaubens, oder: Die kleine Bibel," the first set of Bible stories in German specially made for Jewish children by Moses Mordechai Büdinger. It is a product of the first post-Mendelssohn phase of Jewish accommodation in German culture and it contains a complete excerpt from Holy Writ books for Israelite women and girls and edited in reference to instruction of religion and morality. Büdinger envisions his work as a prayerbook that will be used for fifteen minutes each day and longer on Sabbath day. He believes that it will also benefit Jewish boys who neglected Hebrew and those who were ignorant of the Bible's contents.
