- Abstract
Usually sexual hormones have been linked to its role in reproduction and development of sexual secondary characteristics. This has changed in time, nowadays it is known that they are involved in development and maturation of muscle, bone in neuronal and cognitive processes, and even in bioenergetic processes through the control that are capable to exert over mitocondria the organelle that produces the bioenergetic coin in the body, adenosin tryphosphate (ATP). These mitochondrion are specially numerous in organs with high metabolism such as liver and heart, in the last one is where the experimental evidence has revealed that the presence or absence of estrogens, could have a big impact in its function.
