- Abstract
The article reports on the history of Bengal based on the Bangladesh datum of the Survey of Bangladesh. Bengal comprised Bangladesh and the Indian State of West Bengal. It was settled by the Dravidian-speaking people called "Bang" in about 1000 B.C. Its first empire was the Mauryan Empire which was ruled by Asoka. Its western part attained its economic importance because of the vessels which sailed from its port to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia during the Mauryan period. Bengal also engaged in spice trade with the Arab merchants on the fifth century B.C.
