- Title
Analogies and Students' Understanding of Similarity in Business.
- Authors
Green, Kimberly M.; Smith, Monica W.
- Abstract
The concept of similarity between business situations is core to topics such as relatedness in corporate strategy and the analogical thinking approach to problem-solving. Although management courses cover such topics, there is little evidence that courses teach students to identify analogies, and there is a gap in our understanding of how students utilize analogies. This paper presents a study investigating assessments of similarity by undergraduate business students. Survey questions investigate students' assessments of similarity between two business situations, their confidence in those assessments, and their reliance on nonbusiness analogies to strengthen those assessments.
