- Abstract
This paper presents a pedagogical approach that is designed to enhance student understanding and appreciation of the challenges that business leaders face when confronted with the conflict between the profit-maximizing demands of capitalism and the ethical expectations of society. This approach uses the case of consumer debit cards and whether the fees charged by banking organizations for overdraft protection could be seen as predatory and unethical. The teaching approach, which could be applied both in undergraduate and graduate coursework, uses two teams of students to debate whether organizational actions that are legal could simultaneously be considered unethical if they violate the expectations of society. The teaching approach also includes a consideration of the role that government plays in controlling the behaviors of business with regard to ethics.
