- Abstract
Introduction: thoracic neurogenic tumors are relatively uncommon neoplasms that arise from glial cells, ganglia, paraganglia, or peripheral nerve. They account for 90% of all posterior mediastinal masses and 12-21% of all primary mediastinal tumors. Nerve sheath tumors usually appear as well-circumscribed, slowgrowing tumors. Cellular schwannomas account for up to 5% of benign nerve sheath tumors in adults. They are asymptomatic in more than half of cases and are usually incidentally discovered through routine radiographic examinations. Large mediastinal cystic masses can cause difficulty in breathing and even superior vena cava syndrome. Aim: to demonstrate our experience with symptomatic thoracic cystic schwannoma, surgical treatment and follow-up of the patient. Case report: we present a case of a previously healthy 63-year-old female patient with symptomatic thoracic cystic schwannoma, which was successfully treated with surgery at our Clinic, with complete resolution of the patient's symptoms.
