- Abstract
Biosurfactants are biologically synthesized bio-surface-active agents and produced by diverse groups of microorganisms. They have many advantages such as the low toxicity, biodegradability, employability their chemically synthesized counterparts and environmental compatibility. Many contaminants, like hazardous and nonhazardous industrial wastes represent a serious threat to the health of the livings and ecosystems. In recent years, the enormous diversity of biosurfactants makes them an interesting group of materials for application in many areas such as agriculture, public health, food, waste utilization, and environmental pollution control such as in degradation of hydrocarbons present in soil. These compounds are not only useful biosurfactants and bioemulsifiers, are but also indicated as antibiotic and bio-control agents. The majority of microbial surfactants are glycolipids, lipopeptides or lipoproteins, and polymeric compounds. This review summarizes recent researches on biosurfactants and emphasizes their importance in industrial and environmental biotechnologies.
