- Title
CONEHEAD EFFIGIES: A DISTINCTIVE ART FORM OF THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.
- Authors
Lankford, George E.; Dye, David H.
- Abstract
Researchers familiar with the ceramics of the Central Mississippi Valley have long speculated about the identity of a distinctive conical ceramic figure on bowl rims. The collection of a sizeable corpus of examples, examination of the visual details, and organization of the corpus based on attributes, result in clues toward an identification of the conical figure. When the ethnographic record is added to the discussion, a rich tradition of ritual and myth becomes part of the interpretation of the conehead expression.
