- Abstract
The first translation of the Bible in Portuguese language was developed during the second half of the seventeenth century, in the Dutch East Indies, by the Portuguese Calvinist João Ferreira A. de Almeida (c. 1628-1691). The existing literature on the context of its production is limited, however, to biographical analysis about its main proponent and to typographical surveys about the numerous editions of this translation, leaving to the sidelines the various primary sources available, related to the obstinate doctrinal struggle between Catholics and Calvinists, underlying its development. In this regard, we assume that only through an accurate analysis of the controversialist literature produced in this context, it will be possible to understand the historical significance of this translation process. In this paper, it will be presented three important discoveries about the religious writings produced in this context, held throughout our research, that will be able to enrich the historical analysis on this confrontational translation environment.
