- Abstract
The article focuses on eighteenth century Mexican Creole polymath Antonio León y Gama (1735-1802), especially his works on archaeology and astronomy. As a result of municipal improvements in 1790 for Mexico City, Mexico undertaken by the Viceroy of New Spain, the pre-Columbian sculptures Coatlicue and the Sun Stone were uncovered. Other subjects include 18th-century astronomy and León y Gama's contributions to the field, the scientific culture of the Enlightenment, and the prevailing 18th-century opinion of Europeans regarding the Old and New Worlds. The theories of historian Mary Louise Pratt on contact zones in colonial cultures are considered.
