- Abstract
In the 19th century the political emigrants in France were the strongest group outside the Polish borders, both in an intelectual and artistical meaning. Many of those emigrants tried to spread the knowledge about Poland and its culture, by the illustrated poublications. Those illustrations showed Polish landscapes, historical events, portraits of national heroes and writers. The illustrations were made in different techniques, based on different iconografical sources, then gathered in libraries, Polish museums in Europe and private collections, like Polish Library in Paris, Museum in Rapperswil or the collection of Adolf Cichocki which connected a great number of engravings. A very important part in creating patriotic editions and illustrations played Antoni Oleszczyński and Jan Tysiewicz. Both illustrations and the texts were to rouse national and patriotic consciousness and pride, and keep up spirits. The publishers first of all took care about young people who could be especially interested in illustrations. On the other hand the luxury illustrated editions, translated into different languages, were directed to the foreigners.
