- Abstract
"The Experimental Book Object: Materiality, Media, Design" is an anthology that explores the evolving role of traditional paper books in the digital age. Written by over 20 scholars, the book examines how practitioners in the field of book authoring, designing, and publishing are rethinking and reinventing the essence, functionalities, and forms of books through innovative experimentations. Divided into three parts, the anthology covers topics such as the materiality of books, their mediating qualities, and various book designs. The authors argue that the physical aspects of books contribute to meaning construction and interpretations, and they discuss how these innovations allow physical books to occupy a unique space at the intersection of physical and digital realms. The anthology also embraces diversity by examining various genres and cultural artifacts and giving voice to those who shape the essence of books. While informative, the anthology could benefit from a broader scope that includes more global literary contributions and representation of children's literature. Overall, the anthology provides a valuable resource for scholars and learners interested in the evolution of books and offers fresh pathways for future research.
