The author discusses his participation in the Behind the Veil project at the Center for Documentary Studies in Duke University. This project was an extensive oral history project that documented African-American life during the post-Emancipation Jim Crow South. Several forms of segregation in the U.S. included terror, fraud and a one-party rule that allowed the South to dominate the country's politics.
