- Abstract
Graduate education is an educational process that aims to train scientists and lecturers who will contribute to science by conducting research and meet the needs of the developing and changing society. There are many factors that prevent students from completing PhD. The purpose of this qualitative research is to reveal the reasons for the dropout of PhD student. The research was conducted via qualitative research method and narrative research design. The research is based on in-depth interviews with a male student who dropped out of his PhD at a state university during the thesis proposal stage. As a result, the participant emphasized that the most common reason for leaving the programme was the lack of support from the advisor. Among other reasons, deterioration in work-life balance, lack of opportunity for becoming an academic, permission from job, time allocated to family, transportation problems were emphasized. The participant suggested that students should give importance to the selection of their advisors, attend a school where transportation will not be a problem, and that graduate education should be supported more in policy documents, both financially and morally. In order to encourage students continue their processes in the research, suggestions were made about choosing an advisor, evaluating the process well, providing work-life balance.
