"May God Help Us" Angola's First Declaration Of Independence: The 1951 Petition/Message To The United Nations And U.S.A.
- Authors
Wheeler, Douglas L.
- Abstract
Clandestine nationalists in Luanda, colonial Angola's capital city, managed to have a lengthy petition handed to the United Nations, with a copy to the U.S. President Harry Truman in 1952. In the document, they requested assistance in achieving political independence. The article provides information on how a copy of this unique early expression of Angolan nationalism might have reached the documents of Lawrence Henderson, a missionary in the colony.
