- Abstract
The article examines various sources relating to the existence of a high Orthodox ecclesiastic figure of the seventeenth century : Ignatie of Nicopolis, Bishop of Ramnic and Metropolitan of Wallachia. Despite the variations on this figure's identity and names used in the various sources from that period, the author argues that they all relate to one historic figure. Based on recent findings by the Bulgarian scholar Ivan Biliarsky, the author presents the main characteristics and stages in the life of the head of the Wallachian Orthodox church. Ignatie was born in Nicopolis of a rich Christian family, became the Bishop of Ramnic the main city of the Wallachia region in 1636 mostly due to his link to his friendship with the Christian prince Matei the Vovoide, and died in 1662.
