Campbell, Duncan M.
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the work of late-Ming historian and essayist Zhang Dai. It offers an analysis of the text-image dialectic in Dai's biographical portraits and explores how his work reflects the visual turn in Chinese studies and the humanities in general. It highlights Zhang Dai's interest in affect as well as looks at the characteristics of his biographical writing. Developments in the fields of both portrait painting and biographical writing in the late Ming period are cited.
