- Abstract
Comparative light-microscopic investigations by high magnification of the sklerenchyma fibres of a ClO2g-bleached birch-sulphite pulp and an equally ClO2 -bleached birch-sulphate pulp show the following two differences: 1. The surfaces of the sklerenchyma fibres in the birch-sulphite pulp have undergone a more distinct morphological change than those of the sulphate pulp; this can be explained by the high hemicellulose content of the sulphate fibre surfaces. 2. The sklerenchyma fibres of the sulphite pulp show much more transversely arranged structures than those of the sulphate pulp. These transverse structures of the sulphite sklerenchyma fibres are to be interpreted as "weak areas" permitting distinct folds of the individual fibres. On the contrary, the sklerenchyma fibres of the birch-sulphate pulp are straight in spite of their transversely arranged structures according to their morphological state in the annual rings of the wood. The greater stiffness of the sulphate sklerenchyma fibres probably depends on the state of preservation of the very fibre walls.
