The article presents a speech by Elizabeth Gordon, a retired secondary school English teacher at the University of Canterbury, delivered at the annual conference of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of English (NZATE) in Christchurch, New Zealand on July 2010, in which she offers insight into the history and politics of the English language teaching in New Zealand.
