- Title
A Note on the Status of Ennius's Dream in Petrarch's Africa.
- Authors
Hosle, Paul K.
- Abstract
In Petrarch's Africa, Ennius claims that Homer appeared to him in sleep but that he was nonetheless still awake (9.158–160). This brief comment is important for understanding the veridical status of the dream, but despite evoking a host of background source materials, it has received superficial attention from commentators. This note remedies this gap, while offering new insight more broadly into Petrarch's presentation of the reliable nature of Ennius's dream.
