- Title
Chapter 2: Theoretical Models for Understanding Physical Activity Behavior Among Children and Adolescents--Social Cognitive Theory and Self-Determination Theory.
- Authors
Motl, Robert W.
- Abstract
The article describes the author's research into understanding children's and adolescents' physical education behavior and attitudes. The author explains that previous research generally failed to include theoretical foundation for examining the variables that influence behavior, which he believes limits those studies. He explains that his study is based in social cognitive theory and self-determination theory, which together provide a guide for determinants of behavior and interplay between research findings and application. He describes both types of theory and points out the primary tenets of each that apply to understanding physical activity. He links his research to other chapters in this issue.
