- Abstract
The article discusses issues related to job changes by women employees following childbirth. The study contributes to the research on the labor force behavior of new mothers by asking three central questions. First, how are those who change jobs postpartum different from those who do not in their personal background and conditions of employment. Second, among job changers, how are new jobs different from previous jobs in terms of hours, wages and working conditions. Third, is there evidence that these mothers are trading compensation for family-accommodating factors that may hamper their future occupational attainment. To answer these questions, the authors first present a theoretical account of the job-changing behavior of new mothers and then offer a test of this with job-level variables not often available for study. Results showed that job changers were disadvantaged on a variety of compensation and accommodation dimensions but were no different from job stayers on most background measures.
