- Title
Periodontal Diseases of Children and Adolescents.
- Abstract
The article focuses on periodontal infections and diseases that affect children and adolescents. It states that the American Academy of Periodontology has classified clinically distinct periodontal infections affecting young individuals into five groups: dental plaque-induced gingival diseases, chronic periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, periodontitis that is a manifestation of systemic diseases, and necrotizing periodontal diseases. It presents information on each classification including symptoms and treatment options. It mentions that there is a lower prevalence of destructive periodontal diseases in children compared to adults but that severe forms of periodontitis can develop, and comments that early diagnosis is important in ensuring the greatest chance for successful treatment.
