- Abstract
This paper explores the nature and working of mnemonic images from some wittgensteinian texts where photographs and films appear as similes. My aim is to show that, according to Wittgenstein, 1) one should distinguish between the concept of memory as a source of time and as a picture of the past, 2) both forms of memory are valid language uses, albeit with different grammars (a balance assumed in Schulte and Bouveresse studies, but I believe insufficiently considered and evaluated), 3) metaphor abuse is one cause of misunderstanding, and 4) the wittgensteinian conception of memory can elucidate some typical confusion in certain aesthetical instances (mainly Proust) and vice versa.
