- Abstract
This article provides information for indexers on how to limit their words when indexing. Indexers work to fashion their keenly phrased entries to ensure that their entries make sense, and yet not use one extra word. Once the index is completed indexers are often forced to join their entries into run-in paragraphs. According to publishers, the run-in format of the indexes save space. Scholarly publishers prefer run-in style and that this style works best within two-level indexes. Indexers have a commitment to making information easy to find, then they must exert extra effort to convince publishers to forsake the run-in format for them to be able to fulfill their commitment.
