- Abstract
There is controversy over how results from periodontal therapies completed at university dental clinics can be applied in routine dental practice. Therefore, a multicenter retrospective study investigated tooth loss of patients who underwent periodontal therapy at the four German university dental clinics of Kiel, Greifswald, Heidelberg, and Frankfurt am Main. The aim was to better understand the specifications of individual treatment concepts. The results of these studies will be presented and discussed in this three-part article, part 1 of which already appeared in the previous issue of PARODONTOLOGIE (May 2022) and Part 3 will be published in one of the following issues. At the 4 university centers, 896 patients were enrolled at baseline, after active (APT) and supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). Despite cohort-specific differences, including the length of the median follow-up period of 7 to 18 years, all centers were found to have a low annual tooth loss of ≤ 0.15 teeth per patient during concept-based SPT. Consequently, SPT must be individualized and performed regularly to maintain periodontal stability in the long term. In the following, some therapy-specific details of the respective centers (including specific regional differences that provide better understanding) and the original scientific publications will be discussed in a manner relevant to daily practice.
