- Abstract
Introduction: the work environment is a significant factor that influences work performance and satisfaction in general in any profession. The nursing environment is specific and challenging in many ways and significantly influences the clinical practice of nurses. Aim: To determine the level of satisfaction of nurses with the work environment in selected hospitals in the country. Methodology: The sample consisted of 629 general and practical nurses working in standard inpatient wards of selected hospitals in the Czech Republic. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected (June 2020 to May 2021) using a standardized instrument Practice Environment Scale of The Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI). Statistical testing was performed using Pearson's test (2 t) with a significance level of 5%. Results: The work environment was mostly rated as favorable by nurses (60.3 %), and as unfavorable only in (10.3 %). Nurses aged 31 - 40 years (18.2 %) and nurses with a university degree (13.2 %) rated the work environment more often as unfavorable (p = 0.049). No statistically significant difference was found for the type of ward. The highest rated domains were basics of quality of care (2.91) and leadership skills and support by the nurse leader (2.90), while the lowest rated domain was staffing and material resources (2.53). Cronbach scores of the domains ranged from 0.73 - 0.80. Conclusion: Nurses rated the work environment, as mostly favourable, no difference was found according to hospital size and ward type. Further research could reveal specific domains that affect nurses' satisfaction with the work environment (e.g., communication, discipline and professional growth) so as to reduce the risk of nurses leaving clinical practice.
