The article examines the reliance of dopaminergic neurons on a particular class of Calcium (Ca) (2+) channels for driving basal activity. Blocking the Ca channels, researchers were able to induce adult neurons to switch into other channels used by juvenile neurons in pacemaking. Key information about the significance of hyperpolarization-activated and cyclic nucleotide-gated cation (HCN) channels is presented.
