- Abstract
The article discusses eighteenth-century English artist William Hogarth, focusing especially on his 1755 political print series known as Humours of an Election, which portrayed political scandals and corruption associated with the British general election of 1754. He was known to contemporaries as a satirist and moralist. Specific 18th-century paintings from the series considered are "Canvassing for Votes," "The Election Entertainment," "The Polling," and "Chairing the Member." A discussion of the Jew Bill, a measure which would have allowed foreign Jews living in England to become naturalized, is presented.
