- Abstract
Objectives Aromatherapy is one of the common methods of complementary and traditional medicine that is used during childbirth. Numerous studies have shown the effect of aromatherapy during childbirth and have reached contradictory results. The current overview aims to investigate the effect of aromatherapy on labour. Methods In this overview, two independent authors systematically searched three databases (MEDLINE, Scopus and the Cochrane Central Register Trials) up to September 2021. The methodological quality of each study was evaluated using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). Results According to the results of two reviewers, seven out of nine articles reported that aromatherapy reduced labour pain. Three out of four articles reported that aromatherapy mitigated labour anxiety. The three articles on the effectiveness of aromatherapy on emergency C-section stated that aromatherapy had no effect on pain relief. It was also found that aromatherapy had no calming effect on other delivery outcomes. Conclusions Aromatherapy is effective in reducing pain and anxiety during childbirth, but it has no effect on other childbirth outcomes, Therefore, aromatherapy can be recommended to midwives' policy makers as a simple and accessible method to reduce pain and anxiety in women during childbirth.
