- Abstract
The author reflects on the impact to libraries and the publishing industry left by the subscription purchase model based on large packages of journals known as the Big Deal. The effect on library budgets and collection development, on research collaboration involving several institutions, and on text-mining is examined. Open access, technological innovation, and the continued viability of the scholarly periodical industry are also discussed.
