- Abstract
The text analyzes selected Old Polish sources to identify the ways in which their authors defined the relationship to homeland. Over three hundred years, descriptions of the relationship in question have markedly evolved. Initially, the evolution was underpinned by the tension between the categories of community-based homeland and state-based homeland. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, however, the emphasis was placed on the definitions of the common good and the private good considered as values. In consequence, at the close of 18th century, patriotic ideas were expressed in a complex way, being influenced, on the one hand, by traditional ideas and, on the other hand, by John Locke's philosophy of state.
