- Abstract
Beginning in the 1970s, many villages affected by depopulation became second home tourist destinations for their emigrants. It is a phenomenon that has continued to grow, but inexplicably, it has generated little research. Likewise, it has not aroused the interest of the institutional programs that fight against rural demographic decline. However, this tourism (Diaspora Domestic Tourism) has particular socio-economic consequences in the destinations. Based on two municipalities in the province of Teruel (Aragon, Spain), we will see how it has favoured the recovery of the primary activity and the agricultural ecosystem. Two distinctive characteristics of this type of tourism explain this situation: a) the identity linkage of tourists with the village; b) it is a self-managed second home tourism, autonomous from the large tourist-real estate capital. The research method used was ethnographic, aimed at getting to know and understand social behaviour through qualitative research techniques.
