- Abstract
Numerous studies of materialism have employed Richins and Dawson's 1992 Material Values Scale, typically exploring the correlates of the concept, its relation to product choice, and possibly information-processing implications. Given the original 18 items, administration can be unwieldy and often leads to demand characteristics. Richins developed a short 9-item scale in 2004. Although tests of validity have been made, the scale has yet to be used extensively. In the present study, predictive validity was assessed in the context of Petty and Cacioppo's Elaboration Likelihood Model. Based on a median split, the shortened form performs marginally, compared to the full 18-item scale. Reasons for this limitation include a boundary condition for the shortened scale.
