- Authors

- Abstract
The article examines the influence of signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) proteins on tumor cell proliferation and survival. It enumerates the 7 known members of STAT proteins that includes STAT1, 2, 3, 4, 5A, 5B and 6 and describes them as either tumor suppressing or oncogenic. It recounts a study in this issue of the journal which found that STAT1 expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is lower than that of normal tissues from individuals without cancer.
