IDENTIFYING AND STUDYING PUBLISHED MANUSCRIPTS.
- Authors
Boorman, Stanley
- Abstract
Manuscript copyists and music publishers have for some centuries published manuscripts — in the sense that they prepared sets of copies of the same work, in the same format and layout, for the same purposes, and for sale to any purchaser who wished to buy. This practice seems to have been common in the decades around 1800, with the commercial interest in single arias, among other repertories. The present article describes the criteria for asserting that a manuscript was part of a published edition, and discusses the evidence which confirms or denies such an assertion. It then argues that identifying these published manuscripts is important for a number of musicological enquiries, and suggests the value of a concentrated research undertaking, looking for more examples and developing a history of their use.
