- Title
The "Little Doctrine" and Indigenous Catechesis in New Spain.
- Authors
Burkhart, Louise M.
- Abstract
The article explores the history of catechetical Christianity for indigenous peoples in New Spain through a discussion of a 16th century pictographic manuscript. The author reflects on the use of a question-and-answer format for Christian education. Emphasis is given to the practice among colonial indigenous elites of interpreting the text in terms of the ancestral modes of pictography and the wisdom of noble ancestors in order to develop an indigenous Christian identity.
