- Abstract
The Ideal Library of Food and Words is a collection of ancient texts about speaking, drinking, and eating in antiquity, from Homer to Bishop Fortunat of Poitiers. The volume shows that in ancient societies, the exchange of ideas and controversial discussions during the gastronomic pleasure of banquets were always respectful and benevolent. The anthology also sheds light on the rules for the conduct of such festive gatherings and includes high-quality translations as well as introductions to the presented texts and authors. The book is considered a welcome work in times when freedom of expression and controversial discussions, which are the hallmark of a civilized society, are being restricted.
