- Abstract
The present article proposes the analysis the short story "Carta n° 2", by Reinaldo Moraes, who builds a parody of the Letter to El-Rey Dom Manuel, by Pero Vaz de Caminha, written in 1500. The main issue discussed here is the extend to which the tale presents a counter-narrative on the edge of the canon. In this new version, the interlocutor is not the official Portuguese court, but an alleged lover of the clerk to whom Caminha addresses in order to build an alternative account of the arrival of the first Portuguese in a territory latter called Brazil. Contemporary Brazilian literature, rich in dialogues with the official narratives, opens up possibilities for reading and analysis that allow for certain reconstructions of historical discourse. The 1500 letter, a document considered as one of the first Brazilian national symbols of Brazilian nationality, is, in this fictional piece, parodied through the perspective of historiographic metafiction, as postulated by Linda Hutcheon (1991) and understood in the light of José Murilo de Carvalho (2003) on the construction of national symbols.
