- Abstract
This article summarizes a study on the prevalence and factors associated with melasma in adult women. The study was conducted in Botucatu, Brazil, and included 303 women aged 20 to 60 years. The study found that melasma was prevalent in 36.3% of women, with an additional 1.7% detected through Wood's lamp inspection. Pregnancy was identified as the most common trigger factor, and the prevalence of melasma was higher in the 41-50 age group and among individuals with darker skin phototypes. The study also found associations between melasma and self-declared brown color, menopause, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The study acknowledges limitations and suggests further research is needed to understand the role of genetic ancestry in melasma.
