- Abstract
John Philip Gleason, a professor emeritus at the University of Notre Dame and former president of the American Catholic Historical Association, has passed away. Born in 1927 in Wilmington, Ohio, Gleason had a deep love for history from a young age. He dedicated his life to explaining his discomfort with the changes in the Catholic Church after Vatican II and helping others understand the nature of this transition. Gleason was a respected historian of immigration and ethnicity, with his research focusing on intellectual life, Catholic higher education, and American Catholic ideology. He was known for his clarity and depth in the classroom, as well as his humility and respect for others. Gleason received numerous academic honors throughout his career, including the prestigious Laetare Medal in 1999. His funeral Mass was held at Sacred Heart Basilica, and he is buried in Cedar Grove cemetery.
