- Abstract
The article explores the history of stress as a noun in the English language. Topics discussed include the biographical anecdote of physiologist Hans Selye as a medical student in the 1920s about the syndrome of being sick, the history of stress as an abbreviated form of distress, and a new sense of stress established during the Victorian age defining it as a mental or emotional strain experienced or placed on a person. Also highlighted is a contradiction about epinephrine.
