Abstract: Interaction is a key term in many disciplines and is an abstraction covering many different kinds of interaction. This abstraction allows the development and use of a methodological framework for different applications. The present paper begins by discussing the key term 'interaction', followed by an interdisciplinary exploration of the term that highlights both its potential and multifaceted nature. The focus then shifts to simple spatial models of interaction. This section develops a coherent concept of interaction, as well as a heuristics for analysing it that comprises the most important aspects of spatial interaction and, given its high degree of abstraction, can combine different disciplinary approaches. Definitions, influencing factors, measures of interaction and model terminology are discussed and form the starting point for systematising simple interaction models. This is followed by a presentation of distance-dependent models and gravitational models, as well as multi-factor and complex models. Distance graphs are introduced as an important and universal analytical tool which, in its different variants, allows a nuanced application to specific research questions. The combination of simple techniques and methods of application with a large interpretive potential highlights the added value of this approach compared to traditional archaeological concepts. The possibilities and limitations of this approach are then explored on the basis of selected examples from the Early Iron Age in south-west Germany. These examples not only illustrate the methods but also provide some relevant observations, such as: the average reach of interactions is at around 200 km, but a local minimum of cultural distances is observed below this threshold value, hinting at optimisation efforts. Barriers to interaction and interaction facilitators could also be identified and vary for the different kinds of material.
