- Authors

- Abstract
The article examines the contribution offered by the American art critic Frederick Mason Perkins (1874–1955) to the development of the Lehman and Blumenthal collections of early Italian Renaissance paintings. Thanks to previously unpublished correspondence and photographs from the Frederick Mason Perkins Archive, located in Assisi (Italy), it is possible to shed new light on the role played by Perkins as trusted adviser to Philip and Robert Lehman and George Blumenthal on collecting examples of the so-called 'Primitives' between 1910 and 1920. The documented dialogue between the collectors and their consultant reveals how paintings were acquired on the basis of descriptions and proposals which contained essential information about the provenance and the state of conservation of the works.
