- Abstract
While establishing temporal reference is a widely discussed research topic, the recipient's side and the understanding of temporal reference has received far less attention. Based on a corpus of spoken German, I analyze how interlocutors use temporal information within narrative and counseling interviews. Adopting a Relevance-theoretic approach, I argue that the interlocutors show certain inferential activity regarding the temporal information. Empirical data show that interlocutors use each inference type with certain communicative goals. Consequently, in conversation, the imprecision of the temporal information can be of communicative use.
