- Abstract
(1) Observations of a roan antelope population were made in the Lambwe Valley Game Reserve, Kenya, between May 1970 and June 1971. (2) The structure and distribution of this population is described and an approximate figure for the total number of animals is estimated. (3) Aspects of social biology are briefly described. Roan bulls appeared to be territorial and defended the entire home range. Calving took place in November and December with the females away from the herd. The young calves lay in solitary concealment for the tint few weeks of life after which they joined a group of juveniles within the main herd. (4) The population was under no pressure from non-human predators but nutritional requirements were restricted during the prolonged dry periods and poaching was heavy.
