- Title
TEACHING FOR DEMOCRACY.
- Authors
AYERS, WILLIAM
- Abstract
The article discusses the characteristics of education in a democracy which is rooted in the ideal that every human being is valuable and born free with equal dignity. It is believed that this core value and principle should be reflected in the schools of a democratic society where racial segregation, class separation, and unequal funding are unjust and immoral. The realization of the Freedom Schools initially proposed in 1963 by a young civil rights worker, Charles Cobb, is given as an example of democracy in education, and vice versa. Views on the practices of present schools are also discussed.
