- Abstract
"Kerem ile Aslı" and "Garip ile Şah Senem" have been usually read as biographies or stories of two minstrels, Kerem and Garip, respectively. Although both Asli and Şah Senem singed songs in these stories, their personalities and voices were generally ignored. The aim of this paper is not to invent new historical personalities, such as "Minstrel" Şah Senem or "Minstrel" Asli, however all of them, Kerem, Garip, Aslı and Şah Senem are regarded as fictional characters of folk literature. In this paper, it will be attempted to question the production of gender roles in these stories and to explore female experiences within these romances from a feminist perspective. In brief, both Şah Senem's and Aslı's actions in the plots will be scrutinized while the voices and silences of two different heroines will be listened in order to make them tell their own stories and experiences.
