- Abstract
This article discusses biopiracy by some companies that monopolize genetic resources of developing countries through patent rights. Some companies have taken resources without permission and have acquired patents and profits through research based on such resources. W. R. Grace & Co. obtained patents for a method of extracting neem and used the patent to force Indian companies to use its technology. India had used neem oil traditionally to protect against insect pests and bacterial diseases. Genencor is being sued by Kenya because of profits it has made from a patent that is based on a microorganism obtained illegally in Kenya.
